With over 900,000 connections, Sinal operates Denmark’s largest fiber optic network. Central hubs are distributed nationwide Point of Presence (PoP) stations. They connect regional fiber optic networks, bundle data traffic, and thus ensure the stable operation of the broadband network.
Sinal’s PoP stations ensure the distribution of large amounts of data and network stability, which is why the highest demands are placed on availability and operational reliability. To ensure the continuous operation of this critical infrastructure, Sinal was looking for an energy supply solution that is sustainable, emission-free, fail-safe, and low-maintenance, while also aligning with the company’s ESG strategy. The goal was to be able to operate the PoP stations reliably at all times while consistently relying on environmentally friendly technologies.
“Hydrogen fuel cells offer maximum supply security, low maintenance requirements, and climate neutrality. ”
At Sinal, we operate PoP stations to ensure reliable connections between different fibre optic networks. This is particularly important in crisis situations or during power outages. Hydrogen fuel cells offer maximum supply security, low maintenance requirements, and climate neutrality. This makes them ideal for securing critical infrastructure. Compared to battery solutions, fuel cells have the advantage of largely eliminating the need for rare earths and making use of ultracaps. Consequently, fuel cell technology directly supports our ESG strategy.

The EFOY H₂Rack is a hydrogen-powered, scalable energy solution for locations with existing shelters or containers that require a reliable power supply. It offers a flexible and powerful solution for back-up applications that uses hydrogen as a clean and efficient energy carrier.
EFOY Hydrogen 5.0 Fuel Cells are used in the stationary and scalable energy solutions EFOY H₂Rack R5 and EFOY H₂Rack R10 to ensure a permanent and reliable power supply for critical PoP stations. The systems are climate-neutral, low-maintenance, and thus offer a sustainable alternative to diesel generators and batteries.
The widespread use of hydrogen fuel cell systems ensures a sustainable emergency power supply at numerous Sinal PoP stations. The total installed capacity of 940 kW at over 160 locations ensures that the critical nodes of the Danish fiber optic network can continue to operate in a stable and uninterrupted manner even during prolonged power outages. In addition to providing a reliable energy supply, this solution has made an important contribution to the implementation of Sinal’s ESG goals. It actively contributes to reducing CO₂ emissions and the use of rare earths and supports the development of a sustainable infrastructure.
