Background

Ventech Systems specializes in the manufacture of industrial standalone enclosures engineered for extreme outdoor climates. In this project, a hybrid energy solution was deployed on Mount Wainui (722 m), located on New Zealand’s Kāpiti Coast.

The custom-built enclosure was designed with strict weight limitations (max. 1000 kg) to be airlifted to the summit by helicopter. It now houses critical communications infrastructure, powered by solar energy and an EFOY Pro 12000 Fuel Cell.

The EFOY offers an eco-friendly and autonomous power source for off-grid locations.

Challenge

The key challenge was to provide a reliable, autonomous power solution for critical communications equipment on a remote mountaintop. The system had to endure harsh weather while remaining operational with minimal maintenance. The answer lay in a combination of proven battery technology, a specialized 3-bay enclosure, and the EFOY Pro 12000 Fuel Cell as the final component to ensure continuous, fail-safe operation.

Solution

The EFOY Pro 12000 was installed in a Ventech Systems 3-bay cabinet, featuring a locked compartment for 4 x MT60 methanol cartridges. The fuel line routing was designed to seal off the methanol from other components. A dedicated airflow system ensures the fuel cell has a consistent oxygen supply. Together with a 24V battery bank and a solar array, the system delivers a resilient hybrid energy setup suitable for critical infrastructure.

Result

Thanks to the EFOY Fuel Cell, the system can maintain operations for up to four months without intervention—even during extreme weather. This significantly reduces the need for costly site visits and ensures uninterrupted communications. The result: lower operating costs and increased reliability of critical infrastructure.
