Background

Schleswig-Holstein Netz AG operates electricity and gas lines for around 2.8 million customers in over 900 municipalities. As part of the switch to climate-neutral operating processes, the emergency power supply of a substation was modernised in order to meet current legal requirements for grid stability.

Challenge

The previous emergency power supply for the substation was provided by battery systems. However, these did not provide sufficient bridging time for new legal requirements. The aim was to integrate an additional emergency power supply that would automatically kick in in the event of a fault, require little maintenance and offer long-term operational reliability.

“The energy solution from SFC Energy offers the opportunity to ensure the emergency power supply in our plants with an innovative solution approach and at the same time make a contribution to climate protection.”

Innovative, climate-friendly solution for reliable emergency power.

The solution:
EFOY H₂Cabinet X-Series

The H₂Cabinets of the X-Series are designed for outdoor applications. The turnkey solution can be equipped with up to two EFOY Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Hydrogen can be supplied via individual pressure cylinders or cylinder bundles. An expansion of the cabinet for a larger hydrogen supply is possible.

Solution

The EFOY H₂Cabinet solution is a modular, flexibly customisable system that is ideal for use in substations. Two EFOY Hydrogen 2.5 Fuel Cells reliably secure the power supply for several days. They were integrated as an outdoor control cabinet that fits seamlessly into the existing system structure. The hydrogen supply is regulated via three cylinder bundles with automatic switchover – two bundles are used for the energy supply, the third acts as a test run reserve and to extend the running time.

Result

The EFOY Hydrogen 2.5 Fuel Cells offer a customised, reliable solution for the power requirements of the substation. Remote monitoring, automatic self-testing and low-maintenance operation help to reduce operating costs. SFC Energy’s service covers planning, integration and operation from a single source – a clear advantage for operators of critical infrastructure.
