Reliable autonomous surveillance with solar, battery and EFOY Fuel Cells

Mobile CCTV towers with reliable off-grid power – all year round

EFOY customer: GR TECHNICS

Background

GR Technics is a Belgian manufacturer and rental specialist for mobile light towers, CCTV towers and hybrid off-grid power systems under its STALICO® brand. As a Business Partner of SFC Energy, the company develops solutions combining solar energy, battery storage and EFOY Fuel Cells to provide reliable power wherever grid electricity is unavailable.

Their +12.000 mobile CCTV towers are used across Europe on construction sites, infrastructure projects and security installations where continuous surveillance is required despite the lack of grid connection.

Challenge

Reliable surveillance requires uninterrupted power supply 24 hours a day. While solar energy provides sufficient power during much of the year, prolonged periods of low solar radiation in winter create significant challenges for completely autonomous operation.

Previously, this gap was bridged by diesel generators or regular battery replacement. Both approaches increased operating costs, required frequent maintenance visits and introduced additional noise, emissions and fuel logistics.

GR Technics therefore required a reliable, fully automatic backup power source that could seamlessly complement solar energy while eliminating the disadvantages of diesel-powered systems.

“Our STALICO® towers are built to run off-grid, but in wintertimes solar alone can’t guarantee that.”

Adding EFOY Fuel Cells means the cameras simply keep running — through the darkest weeks, without a site visit and without a diesel generator on standby. For us and our rental customers, that year-round reliability is the whole point.

Solution

A STALICO® mobile CCTV tower integrates one EFOY 2800 fuel cell together with two M28 methanol cartridges inside the weatherproof base cabinet. The system operates as a fully automated hybrid solution:

  • Solar panels provide the primary energy source.
  • Batteries store the generated energy.
  • Whenever battery voltage falls below a defined threshold, the EFOY Fuel Cell automatically starts and recharges the batteries.
  • Once sufficient charge has been restored, the fuel cell returns to standby mode.

This intelligent energy management allows the towers to operate completely autonomously throughout the year without requiring operator intervention. The methanol cartridges can be replaced quickly without tools, while the entire system remains compact, mobile and immediately ready for deployment at any location.

Result

By combining solar energy, batteries and EFOY Fuel Cells, GR Technics transformed its mobile CCTV towers into true year-round off-grid systems.

The solution enables:

  • Continuous 24/7 surveillance throughout the year
  • Fully autonomous operation during winter months
  • Elimination of diesel generators
  • No battery replacement trips
  • No local emissions
  • Minimal operating costs
  • Quiet operation for sensitive environments

Customers can simply deploy the tower wherever surveillance is needed and rely on continuous autonomous operation without further intervention.
