Background

GWU-Umwelttechnik GmbH develops innovative Doppler Wind LiDAR and environmental measurement systems for wind resource assessment and environmental monitoring. Their systems are available as mobile trailer solutions or stationary weatherproof installations and are deployed for long-term measurement campaigns in remote locations. To ensure reliable operation under all environmental conditions, GWU developed its Hybrid Power System (GWU-HPS), combining renewable energy generation with reliable backup power.

Challenge

Wind LiDAR and environmental measurement systems are often deployed in remote, off-grid locations where no grid connection is available. The systems must operate reliably 24/7 over weeks or even months to ensure uninterrupted data collection.

In addition to powering the measurement equipment itself, the energy solution must also support peripheral devices while remaining weather-independent, low-maintenance and easy to deploy. Continuous operation without user intervention is essential to minimize service visits, reduce operating costs and ensure reliable measurements under all environmental conditions.

Solution

The GWU Hybrid Power System combines approximately 1 kW of photovoltaic capacity with EFOY Pro Fuel Cells to provide a completely autonomous, sustainable power supply. During normal operation, the measurement systems are primarily powered by solar energy. Whenever solar generation is insufficient due to adverse weather conditions or seasonal influences, the EFOY Pro Fuel Cell automatically starts and reliably supplies the required energy.

Installed inside the GWU-LiDAR Trailer or weatherproof housing, the hybrid system enables continuous operation of wind profile and environmental measurement equipment without requiring user intervention. In addition, the EFOY Cloud allows operators to remotely monitor the entire power system, minimizing maintenance effort and preventing unexpected downtime. The result is a highly reliable, low-maintenance and environmentally friendly energy solution for long-term remote deployments.
